Specialiseer je in gezondheidsbeleid, maatschappelijke veerkracht en gezondheid en welzijn.

Centraal in de nieuwe Health, Wellbeing and Society track van de master Sociologie staat het inzicht dat duurzaamheid valt of staat met het creëren van veerkrachtige en gezonde gemeenschappen die zich kunnen aanpassen aan veranderende omstandigheden zonder hun kernidentiteit te verliezen. Je analyseert hoe gezondheid en welzijn is verdeeld over Westerse samenlevingen. Maar ook hoe gezondheid en welzijn op maatschappelijk micro-, meso- en macroniveau kan worden verbeterd.

Centraal thema: gezondheidsbeleid, maatschappelijke veerkracht en gezondheid en welzijn. Gecombineerde inzichten uit de sociologie en de gezondheidswetenschappen en een nauwe samenwerking met zorgorganisaties stellen je in staat je te ontwikkelen tot een specialist op het gebied van gezondheidsbeleid, maatschappelijke veerkracht en gezondheid en welzijn. Leer analyseren hoe gezondheid en welzijn samenhangen met politiek en beleid op het gebied van welvaart en gezondheidszorg en met demografische en maatschappelijke factoren op verschillende niveaus.

By adding a junior traineeship of 30 ECTS (half a year) to the regular Master's program, the Extended Master provides relevant working experience and learning opportunities to enhance your professional and academic skills. The entire program (regular + extended) lasts 18 months (90 ECTS).

specialisatie Extended Master Sociology

The Extended Master in Sociology (EMS) is a Master's program lasting 18 months (90 ECTS), divided into three semesters.

During the first semester, EMS students will do the course work of the regularone-year Master in Sociology at Tilburg University. During semesters two and three, students will follow a junior traineeship at a selected organization for 50% of their time, during which they will participate in existing (research) projects; for the other 50% of the time students will carry out research for - and write - the Master Thesis. The EMS combines academic education and scientific research during the Master's thesis trajectory with in-depth work experience in an organization in a way that is not possible in the one-year Master's program.
The goal of the EMS is to provide students with relevant work experience and to enhance their research skills and knowledge.

specialisatie Double Degree in Sociology and Population Studies

Study modern societies in Tilburg University & Universitat Pompeu Fabra to identify the main forces and challenges faced by key social institutions, such as families, schools, communities, and jobs.

Two of the highest-ranked Social Science Departments in Europe combine their strengths to offer double-degree research training in Sociology and Population Studies. You will get two full Master's degrees by combining two related subject areas with different approaches. Graduate both as Master of Research in Sociology and Demography at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) and Master of Science in Sociology at Tilburg University. An ultimate international experience by studying in Barcelona half of the time.

This 1.5-year program consists of 90 credits (ECTS). The first ¾ year you'll spend at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain. The second ¾ year you'll spend at Tilburg University.

You will write your Master's thesis under the supervision of a UPF or Tilburg University faculty member. Your second reader will be automatically someone from the other institution, who will act as a second grader.

Combine the Sociology Master's programs from Tilburg University and the University of Bamberg (Germany).

Get two full Master's degrees in Sociology from two outstanding academic institutions.

The degree of the University of Bamberg focuses on the specializations 'Empirical Social Research' and 'Education, Labour Market, Inequality', following a scientific as well as practice-oriented approach.

The degree of Tilburg University focuses on politics, policy and society in a comparative perspective.

This two-year program consists of 120 credits (ECTS), of which:

Combine the Sociology Master's programs from Tilburg University and the University of Trento (Italy) to become an expert in political research, social policy and solving social cohesion related-issues.This double degree program in Sociology is resulting in two academic Master titles: the degree of the University of Trento focuses on political research, social policy and qualitative research. The degree of Tilburg University focuses on translating societal problems into sociological research to evaluate current policy with and derive new policies from.

This two-year program consists of 120 credits (ECTS), of which:

You will follow ten research methods and labs courses (51 ECTS in total) and two content courses (12 ECTS in total) during your first year at the University of Trento.

You will follow five content courses (27 ECTS in total) and two elective courses (9 ECTS in total) during your second year at Tilburg University.

You will start your Master's thesis (24 ECTS) in your second year with drawing your Individual Research Proposal with feedback of the thesis supervisors. You will write your Master's thesis under joint supervision of faculty members of both University of Trento and Tilburg University.

The first year you'll spend at the University of Trento in Trento, Italy. The second year you'll spend at Tilburg University.

Health, Wellbeing and Society analyses the roots of differences in health and wellbeing using sociological theories, and how those are related to welfare, healthcare politics and policy. This track of the MSc Sociology offers students invaluable insights in key questions of how differences in health and wellbeing can be explained from a sociological perspective and, more specifically, how it is related to demographic and societal factors at different levels.
Combining scientific insights from sociology and health sciences, and with a strong collaboration with healthcare organizations, you will learn to become a specialist in the field of healthcare policy, societal resilience, and health and wellbeing.

  • Learn to understand, analyze, change/improve and act upon differences in health and wellbeing, and differences of welfare and healthcare policies for different groups of people and individuals.
  • International perspective focusing on health, wellbeing and society in mainly Western societies.
  • Become familiarized with a multitude of perspectives and analytical and practical models which are aimed at improving and/or maintaining health and wellbeing via the Academic Collaborative Centers of Tranzo.
  • Taught in small, interactive workgroups with excellent individual thesis supervision.
  • Community-building activities throughout the program will ensure cohesion in the programs cohort, such as guest speakers, simulation, serious gaming, study trips.
