Master's Ambassador Deborah Bakker
This programme gives me the freedom to develop my own research interests
This master's track was the best choice for me for several reasons. Firstly, because it’s a research master, a lot of attention is paid to methodological as well as theoretical issues. I wanted to improve my academic skills and learn more about what it takes to conduct research in IR, and this master's track is a good way to do both. All classes are organised as interactive discussion groups and this helps to critically reflect on my own assumptions as well as on the literature.
A second advantage is the freedom in this programme to develop my own research interests...
Another advantage is the way we are assessed, which usually means assignments instead of exams. For example, we’ve had to write critical reflections on literature, methodological traditions in general and research practices. Also, we finish the research seminars by writing a proper research paper, applying what we’ve learned to an actual case. This is a challenging but very instructive way of learning how to conduct your own research.
