We tonen daarom de Engelstalige opleidingsinformatie.
Modern life and society require people to stay mobile. While this is true for all stages of life, it is in particular important when we grow older. This master programme equips you with the knowledge and skills to study human behaviour in traffic, and to conceive of interventions that keep people mobile.

Reduced mobility in old age results in a significant increase in the cost to society, not only because of the need for hired transport but also because of secondary consequences, like less social integration, lower satisfaction with life, and reduced mental agility, which can then lead to tertiary consequences like isolation and depression.

This programme makes you an expert in this field. Different disciplines cover the broad theme of mobility and offer courses that examine social perspectives, that consider how a decline in the ability to process information affects mobility, and that focus on the clinical effects of ageing (e.g. dementia). A practical course element provides hands-on training using state-of-the-art assessment techniques and instruments. This will enable you to acquire the skills you will need in the applied and research field, e.g. for assessment in the field and in advanced driving simulators.

I really like the lectures and the professors. They're always well-prepared and great fun to listen to.

I'm an exchange student from Jena in Germany. I'm studying here for one semester. I really wanted to come to the Netherlands because of the outstanding psychology research that is being done here. Also, unlike in some other countries, universities here offer a wide range of English-taught courses.Groningen appealed to me in particular because it seemed very much like Jena. Not too big a city, but very beautiful, and dynamic too, because of the many students who live here. The city has definitely met my expectations. I like it a lot!The same goes for the University of Groningen. My lecturer back in Jena told me that the workload here would be quite heavy. I have to do more reading here than at the University of Jena. But I don't mind, I actually enjoy it. The subject matter is very interesting and reading a lot really helps you get into the topics.I also really like the lectures and the professors. They're always well-prepared and are clearly comfortable in front of the class, which makes them great fun to listen to.The most interesting course unit I took here in Groningen was in Traffic Psychology. It was only attended by a few people, but the professor was great and the subject matter was fascinating. I would love to do something related to Traffic Psychology for my Master's placement, addressing questions like what distracts people when they're driving, and what can be done about it?I'm not quite sure what I want to do after my Master's. I think a traineeship would be a good start, maybe at a consulting firm, preferably a small one. But I'll be studying for at least another year, so luckily there's still time to figure it out.

Stichting Bevordering Verkeerseducatie (SBV), an organization in Friesland.

I work at Stichting Bevordering Verkeerseducatie (SBV), an organization in Friesland that aims to improve road safety by education. We provide courses and workshops to various target groups, all of which are about the behaviour of road users. Using WhatsApp on your bike, for instance, is a hot topic for the young, as are the use of alcohol and drugs in traffic. As a psychologist, I help develop the courses and measure their effectiveness. I'm also project leader: I organize teaching projects, find the right people and apply for grants.I started my career as a child neuropsychologist. As it was a part-time job, I looked for another job on the side, which is how I ended up at the SBV. And to my surprise I discovered I enjoyed the work here much more. There's a lot of variety to it: one day I'm doling out cake to old ladies on a mobility scooter course and the next I'm in a meeting with the local government. And I also have the freedom to take the initiative. If I have an idea for a new project I can present it to the local government and then carry it out while in the health sector, it's more about following a fixed schedule. When developing course materials and questionnaires I use the theories that we dealt with during my studies. I also often use the research and analyses techniques that I learnt when studying psychology. The Master's programme in Traffic Psychology didn't exist when I was a student. Now that I have gained some experience in traffic psychology I definitely think that I would have enjoyed the programme. This area of psychology is also interesting for those who don't want to go into health care but have more affiliation with social issues, influencing behaviour and government policy. It is also relatively new: road safety used to be more about technology and infrastructure.Currently, however, it is becoming clear that road safety largely depends on human behaviour. That means traffic psychology plays an ever-increasing role in the development of government policy. If you choose study Traffic Psychology you specialise in a field that is increasingly in demand, but for which there are few specific programmes.

My work is about the development of Smart Mobility, devices that give support when participating in traffic, for example when driving.

During my study in psychology I decided to specialize in traffic psychology. I liked that it was an applied field in which you could actually help people, without a daily dose of heavy personal drama. I think it is interesting that you can stimulate certain behaviour in people by organizing the environment in a certain way.People's behaviour in traffic is very dependent on the way a road is organized. When you make a road narrower, people will automatically drive slower. When, in the Netherlands, you suddenly place traffic signs on the left hand side of the road instead of on the right hand side, people won't see them at all. After finishing my study I started working for a consultancy and engineering bureau. For instance, when a road authority had a problem with a junction where a lot of accidents occurred, they came to us for advice. We would investigate what was going on and advised them on what had to change in order to make it safer. After a couple of years I switched jobs to work for Rijkswaterstaat (the Dutch Department of Waterways and Public Works). This way I could experience what it was like to be the client instead of the contractor. It also enabled me to do a PhD. Now I work for a programme called Connecting Mobility, whilst doing a PhD at the same time. My work is about the development of Smart Mobility, devices that give support when participating in traffic, for example when driving. This can vary from traffic information on your smartphone to self-driving cars. In the Netherlands, there are a lot of different parties involved in this and we bring them together and try to speed up and facilitate the developments. I really love my job. It is very diverse; one day I'm writing an article based on a literature review, the other I'm consulting with the Dutch AA or am I chairing a meeting. I still use the things I learned during my study on a daily basis, especially when interpreting the psychological processes with regard to behaviour in traffic. There is a shortage of traffic psychologists in the Netherlands. In civil engineering awareness increases that it is also important to look at people's behaviour when constructing roads. That's why there are more and more jobs available for people who are knowledgeable on traffic and behaviour.

Working as a traffic psychologist at Goudappel Coffeng, a consultancy bureau in the traffic and transportation field.

When I studied Psychology the official Master's in 'Traffic Psychology' did not exist yet. I specialized in the theory of functions, which is about behaviour. For example, about how people perceive and process information, and how much they can remember. You can apply this knowledge in traffic, as well. After my studies, I did a PhD. I examined the best ways to present travel information along the side of the road. What are the best ways to make sure people see the information, understand it and make the right decision, all in three seconds while they are driving. After my PhD, I started working as a traffic psychologist at Goudappel Coffeng, a consultancy bureau in the traffic and transportation field. Here I look at specific problems in traffic and I try, by looking at human behaviour, to solve these problems. I also try to find ways to make people choose other ways of transportation than cars, so they do not end up in traffic jams. Our bureau is hired by, for example, local governments. It happens quite often that engineers build smart things, but forget that there are people who have to deal with their solutions. I make sure that the solutions of the engineers are also effective. I really like my job. It is an incredibly varied job, one day I make offers/tenders to secure assignments from clients and the other I am attending an expert session where I state what I think should be changed in a certain traffic situation. I regularly stand on a roundabout or drive on a highway to see what makes it dangerous. I also make programmes to stimulate people to take public transport or the bicycle instead of the car. There is a lot of work in this field, which became very important during the past five years. People are starting to find out that it is also very important to think about the human aspect whilst building. I still use a lot from what I learned during my studies. I learned to do research very well. A lot of people complain that there is so much education in statistics at the University of Groningen, but I am very happy about that now.
