Do you want to understand how real estate markets function? The University of Groningen's Master of Science in Real Estate Studies offers a unique one-year educational programme in real estate to prepare you to become a leader in the real estate industry.

Starting from September 1, 2019 Real Estate Studies is a selective master. See more about the procedure under 'Admission and Application'.

Real estate markets have become global, making the real estate profession an international enterprise. At the same time, global and commercial brokers report major differences among local real estate markets. That urges for real estate professionals who are trained in integrating financial, economic and geographic skills with knowledge of local institutions.

The Department of Economic Geography at UG is home to one of the leading Real Estate Centres in Continental Europe. It offers a unique one-year Master programme that will enable you to understand the fundamentals of real estate markets by investigating every field that impacts the real estate industry (e.g. finance, land economics, planning, construction, development, management, law). This gives the programme a multidisciplinary character. This allows us to provide you with research-based expertise to solve complex problems in contemporary real estate. This Master programme is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

We seek focused, committed applicants who recently finished their bachelor programme and want to apply their intellectual gifts to contribute to the real estate industry. You will be joining a diverse group of students and professionals who all share a passion for scientific rigor applied to solve complex problems in real estate and other fields that impact the real estate industry.

As a result of our many years of experience, our graduates work as developers, consultants, financiers, local policy makers, real estate valuers, real estate managers, et cetera, throughout the domestic and international real estate industry, holding positions of leadership in the real estate industry worldwide.

One-year intensive Master programme
UG's Master of Science in Real Estate Studies (MSc. RES) offers a unique one-year intensive educational programme in real estate to prepare you to become a leader in the real estate industry.

UG's MSc. RES offers 10 ECTS in optional courses where you are able to specialize in your field of interest (e.g. finance, economics, geography, planning, management, law).

Students have an option to pursue internships or other opportunities. However, there is little room in our programme for intensive 3 or 6-months internships as the programme is only one-year. Therefore, we highly encourage our students to combine an internship with thesis writing at a renowned firm in the field of real estate or other related fields that impact the real estate industry. Students who want to persue intensive internships during the Master programme without combining it with thesis writing extend their programme, on average, with 6 months. Students also have an option to study abroad, but the same dilemmas often arise if one cannot combine it with thesis writing.

Kasimir Hagendoorn
afgestudeerd in 2009 werkzaam als Project manager and consultant bij Procap
Working on the safety of the Netherlands

Hi! I'm Kasimir and currently working on the safety of the Netherlands. Safety, because I'm working on a project for strengthening of the Afsluitdijk, a waterworks icon of the Netherlands. And as is widely known, the Netherlands are largely below sea level. Therefore, it is of great importance to keep our waterworks in perfect condition in line with future climatological changes.

Within the project 'the Afsluitdijk' (literally meaning 'closing dike'), I'm responsible for the stakeholder management. I have to foresee possible future interventions of stakeholder-issues and anticipate on it...
This is possible, because my employer is not the Dutch government, but Procap, a middle-sized consultancy and project management company. I started to work for Procap in 2012 as a project manager and consultant, almost 2 years after I graduated.
So how did I get to where I am now? First we have to go back to 2008, the time when I had to choose a master. I knew that I was interested in the brick world and its environment. Therefore, I decided to start with two masters in Groningen: Spatial Planning and Real Estate Studies. In my opinion both studies are complementary to each other and I enjoyed the focus of the micro and macro of both masters. Because in the end, isn't it nowadays about an integral approach?
After my graduation in 2010, I started with an internship at an engineering company. I did this, because I thought an internship would help me to get acquainted with the work field and to support the decision to start to work in the field I'm interested in. During my internship I conducted my master research and apparently I did well, as the engineering company said they would be happy to hire me as an advisor. Which I was willing to do, but first I had to go to NYC for a fellowship, where I got accepted as a visiting fellow for the period of three months.  When I got back from NYC, unfortunately, the engineering company couldn't offer me the job anymore because they had to fire 300 people. So this is the moment where I had to start to search for a job,
I started to contact the people in the field of spatial planning and real estate who I already knew and who could possibly help me. Doing so, I managed to get several interviews. However, due to the economic crisis, most companies were not willing to take the risk of hiring a new person. Except for Procap, who had just fired some people, but were interested in having me as a research intern. I was eager to help them for a couple of months as an intern, but right after we were about to close the deal, a social housing company contacted me and asked whether I was interested to work on Bonaire, an island in the Caribbean. I couldn't refuse this offer. I had a great time and learned a lot, but after one year it was time to move on and I mentioned to Procap I was going back to the Netherlands. This is when Procap contacted me again, and we managed to agree on the right terms, which makes that I've been happily working for them since 2012.
After all I feel the internship helped me to expand my network, helped me to understand how to be a professional and use my knowledge and skills I gained during my studies and extracurricular activities. As a student there's so much you don't know and the way companies work you can only discover while working for them.

Beroepsperspectief / arbeidsmarkt

Many graduates find jobs as market researchers or real estate consultants in a company, consultancy or government agency, or become a concept or property developer at a real estate investor. Graduate students find work as a research manager or portfolio manager at a real estate investor. Several people opt for an academic career at the university. In practice, graduates mostly do policy work, both in the private sector as well as at the local, regional and national government.

During the programme we offer support for your career preparation. The Career Services are provided by the Careers Company and the UG Career Services.
