Psychology is the key to understanding and modifying human behaviour and development. The master is special since it covers the broad range of areas involved.

In a diverse society subjected to large demographic, environmental as well as technological changes, profound scientific knowledge of human behaviour is essential to the solution of many practical and fundamental problems. Moreover, the increasing influence of this knowledge in approaching societal challenges also leads to new questions, requiring scientific and ethical reflection.

In the master, related to clinical treatment and research, you can be trained in clinical psychology, clinical neuropsychology, and forensic psychology. Other master tracks also target mental health and healthy aging, education, training and talent development, creativity, functioning at the work place, environmentally friendly behaviour, traffic and mobility. Moreover, some tracks offer fundamental studies of the biological, cognitive, and social factors influencing behaviour. All tracks can be combined with a focus on statistical knowledge and skills. In addition, given the increasing impact of scientific psychological knowledge in society, our program offers a unique master track on reflecting on psychology.

For the Psychology master tracks, see the 'Programme', or look at all BSS masters.

tracks

track Clinical Neuropsychology

Neuropsychology: Cognition, emotion and behaviour as functions of the brain.

Clinical neuropsychology is a specialty discipline within psychology which is focused on the associations between the brain and neuropsychological functions, including cognition, emotion and behaviour. Clinical neuropsychology is particularly interested in the effects of brain disorders and other clinical conditions affecting the brain on these functions.

Disorders and conditions comprise acquired or congenital neurological and neuropsychiatric conditions in children, adolescents and adults, such as ADHD, autism, stroke, brain tumor, traumatic brain injury, epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, drug abuse, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, etc.

Clinical neuropsychologists can be involved in both the assessment and treatment of people with brain disorders in various applied and often clinical settings, but also in patient related research. Methods used in the field of clinical neuropsychology are neuropsychological tests, neuroimaging and electrophysiological techniques.

With the aging population, the number of people with neuropsychological disorders increases and with this also the demand for well trained clinical neuropsychologists.

track Work, Organizational and Personnel Psychology

The world of work is changing rapidly, posing new challenges for both employees and organizations.  Would you like to contribute to productive solutions and their implementation?

The field of Work, Organizational and Personnel Psychology(WOP) studies the factors that influence how people feel and behave at work, as well as the consequences of this behavior.

Our master programme focuses on such diverse topics as motivation, leadership, (un)ethical behavior, goal pursuit, aging at work and career development, training and coaching, personality, and creativity. This large diversity of topics is also reflected in our research methods, our staff, and our teaching programme. Our courses help you gain advanced knowledge of cutting-edge research and gives you the opportunity to develop a broad set of professional skills. It is precisely this combination of theory and practice that makes Work, Organizational and Personnel Psychology an exciting field to study and to work in.

The WOP Master aims to deliver highly skilled and versatile WOP psychologists who are capable of independently monitoring and contributing to new developments in the field. After completing our program, you will have gained the knowledge and skills required to analyze, understand, and change a wide variety of phenomena that occur in organizations.

track Cognitive Psychology and Psychophysiology (CPP)

Cognitive psychology and psychophysiology studies cognitive functioning (memory, learning, perception, etc.) of healthy people

How do we store information in working memory? What changes in that process during ageing? How does mood affect our perceptions? What brain areas allow you to switch between two tasks? And how does all that mental activity affect the body?

In the master track Cognitive Psychology and Psychophysiology you study – amongst others – these questions. You will learn about the latest theories and insights in this broad area, and you will get hands-on experience with research tools such as advanced reaction time analyses, EEG and TMS. You will put all this knowledge into practice during your master's research project. In the programme, we put a strong emphasis on applications of all the theory you study: over and over again, we will ask “how can we use this knowledge in everyday life?”

track Clinical Forensic Psychology and Victimology

Past victimization, previous offending, psychopathology, aggression, being male: Which of these variables might be the best predictor of future violent (re)offending?

And which variables might increase the chance of (re)victimization? How can interventions help to prevent crime? How can victims of violence and crime overcome their victimization?

If you are intrigued by questions about the psychology of violence and crime, and you are not satisfied with easy answers, consider entering the Master's degree programme 'Clinical Forensic Psychology and Victimology'. In this programme we aim to understand acts of violence and crime from both the victims' and the offenders' perspective. You will gain a theoretical insight into the correlates of violence and crime and their consequences. Moreover you will acquire practical skills to enable you to assess and intervene in both offender and victim contexts. Our unique integrative approach aims to highlight the many psychological nuances between the black-and-white of the victim and offender dichotomy.

track Talent Development and Creativity

How do athletes and musicians develop their talent? How can teachers stimulate children's talents and creativity in the classroom? And how can companies encourage creativity among their employees?

In any achievement domain, there is an increasing focus on the development, selection, and promotion of talent and creativity. In this unique, internationally-oriented Master's programme you will develop the expertise to enable you to select, develop, and nurture talent and creativity in individuals and organisations across achievement domains.

You will learn about the theoretical approaches to talent development and creativity, and you will be in contact with different organisations in the worlds of sport, business and education so you can learn about their policies on encouraging talent and creativity.

As part of your MSc thesis you will carry out a research project, possibly combined with an internship, to investigate the development of talent and/or creativity in the achievement domain that interests you most.

track Reflecting on Psychology

Reflecting on Psychology (RoP) means putting psychology in perspective. Our goal is to understand why psychological concepts and phenomena are the way they are, and how they could be different.

Using perspectives from the history, philosophy, and sociology of science, this master encourages students to study the field of Psychology itself, and to explore its relations with other parts of science and society. Students of Reflecting on Psychology will study topics such as the value of fMRI scans for law, the distinction between enhancement and therapy, the influence of media stories about autism on its clinical reality, the dominance of the experimental method in psychology, or the cultural variability of psychological phenomena.

This programme aims to attract a select group of students who will be supervised individually and encouraged to come up with their own research topics. Students from Reflecting on Psychology will become skilled in writing, qualitative analysis and reflection. They will learn how to write essays, participate in discussions, and give lectures. By examining psychology's past and its present, as well as its issues and its boundaries, we aim to give students access to its future

track Traffic Psychology and Sustained Mobility

Modern life and society require people to stay mobile. This master equips you with the knowledge & skills to study human behaviour in traffic and to conceive of interventions that keep people mobile.

How do we manage to process all the information that we are bombarded with in busy traffic? How do we master driving a car, a task that is very complex at first but later can be so boring that we fall asleep behind the steering wheel? Why do we think we can send a text message while cycling (while others cannot)? And if we grow old, how can we take care we can still get from A to B ourselves? Is a shocking campaign more effectve than a more neutral one? Can we do anything against road rage? What is the effect of ecstasy on driving behaviour? And is driving with a personality disorder safe?

These are questions we try to answer in Traffic Psychology.

This programme makes you an expert in this field. Different disciplines cover the broad theme of mobility and offer courses that examine social perspectives, that consider how a decline in the ability to process information affects mobility, and that focus on the clinical effects of ageing (e.g. dementia). A practical course element provides hands-on training using state-of-the-art assessment techniques and instruments. This will enable you to acquire the skills you will need in the applied and research field, e.g. for assessment in the field and in advanced driving simulators.

track Applied Social Psychology

How can psychology contribute to solving conflicts between groups, to a better environment, or health?

In our master program, we highlight which social psychological factors determine human behavior, and how these factors can be influenced. Based on social psychological theories, we outline how such factors can be studied, and how knowledge derived from research can be implemented in an applied context.

Social psychological research can deliver insights on how to solve societal and environmental problems. We examine issues like:

  • crime,
  • discrimination
  • crowd behavior
  • health-related aspects of behavior
  • economic behavior
  • behavior within a social group
  • development and change of social norms

track Clinical Psychology

Theory, diagnosis and intervention.

The Clinical Psychology program focuses on three important, inter-related topics:

  • A better understanding of psychopathology (theory)
  • Determining what is going on (diagnosis)
  • Bringing about change (intervention)

The program takes an evidence-based approach in that the course material covering these three areas is based on findings from (experimental) empirical research.

The research program informing the curriculum of the master-track Clinical Psychology includes diverse topics, for example:
  • cognitive biases
  • social cognition in psychotic disorders
  • diagnosis and treatment of anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorders
  • trauma, memory, and dissociation
  • eating disorders and unexplained physical somatic problems

Master's thesis research projects may be carried out within the research group Experimental Psychotherapy and Psychopathology  as well as at external institutions. In addition, students may take the initiative to arrange a clinical internship that counts towards course credit.

track Environmental Psychology

Which factors induce environmentally harmful behaviour and what motivates people to act pro-environmentally and accept pro-environmental policies? How does the changing environment affect us?

Questions like these are addressed in the Master's programme 'Environmental psychology'. The programme focuses on the interactions between humans and their environment. You will acquire theoretical knowledge and methodological skills needed to understand the human dimension of environmental and energy-related problems. The programme is taught by the world-leading Environmental Psychology group at the University of Groningen.

There is an urgent demand for this expertise in environmental psychology. Governments and companies seek advice from environmental psychologists to understand the human dimension of sustainable development, and leading journals, such as Nature, stress the importance of the social sciences for understanding and tackling environmental and energy-related problems. This master will equip you for job opportunities that focus on finding effective and societally acceptable solutions to these problems.

Wang Dan
So far this study experience has given me a chance to realize my full academic potential, and has contributed to get a better understanding of myself

I come from China and I am enrolled in the master in Cognitive Psychology and Psychophysiology, because I am fascinated in this field. After evaluating information about the environment, education equality, costs, and tuition fees in Groningen, together with additional information about the Netherlands from my parents, I decided to start studying at the RUG.

At the beginning of my study my daily life was full of trouble. Except for all the practical and logistical issues I had to solve as a new Groningen citizen, I also had problems to find the right study strategy...
Feeling supported and safe at the very start of my studies was crucial, and 3 months into the program I realized that I had made the right decision to come to Groningen. So far this study experience has given me a chance to realize my full academic potential, and has contributed to get a better understanding of myself.
The English master in Psychology program at the RUG is still work in progress. The distribution of courses throughout the year could be improved.
During my study I did a half year internship as a psychology teacher in a special secondary school. After finishing my master I am intending to go back to China maybe to become a teacher.
I have learned things which are totally different from what I learned before and that is quite challenging.

Dynamics of the Healthy Brain

Ageing affects our brain. But how does the brain deal with these changes? “The better our understanding of the brain, the easier it will be to promote healthy ageing.

Ageing does not necessarily mean that cognitive functions, such as memory and attention, deteriorate. An MRI-scan of someone's brain may reveal that ageing affects the anatomical structure of the brain, but that does not tell you much about how different parts of the brain interact...
The better our understanding of our behavior and underlying brain mechanisms, the easier it will be to promote healthy ageing for all of us.

onderzoekerMy research focuses on mental habits (automatic processes) and addiction. Automatic attentional and behavioral responses are necessary to guide behavior towards natural rewards (good food, attractive mates). However, they may become strongly linked to cues of addiction and thus contribute to use that occurs despite a conscious desire to restrain.

My work examines the role of these automatic appetitive processes in failures to control addictive behavior. I also examine how mindfulness training may help to overcome such mental habits, thereby increasing self-control.

Interaction between individual, group and society

Man is by nature a remarkably social and co-operative entity. People not only feel comfortable in groups and social networks, together they construct whole societies. Such group processes create huge benefits for each individual. In spite of this, we increasingly see ourselves as unique and autonomous. Such interaction between individual, group and society is central to my research.
