Mechanical Engineering in Groningen has a long-running tradition of top research. We offer student a Master's degree programme in Mechanical Engineering that perfectly fits the needs of a flourishing local industry, as well as preparing you for an international career in industry.

The MSc Mechanical Engineering ('Werktuigbouwkunde' in Dutch) is organized with the goal of shaping new leaders in the engineering field. In the North of the Netherlands and, in particular, at the University of Groningen, cutting-edge research in mechanical engineering has been performed across various institutes for many years.

Our Master’s degree programme in Mechanical Engineering makes the connection between a collaboration of highly ranked research institutes, and the demands of modern local and global industry, offering students a unique combination of engineering science and its applications to real-life problems.

The programme offers four different tracks, each preparing you for a different specialized field: (1) Advanced Instrumentation, (2) Smart Factories, (3) Process Design for Energy Systems and (4) Materials for Mechanical Engineering.

The four tracks are created in such a way that the needs of industry are met, perfectly preparing students for the innovative working field. Each track is closely linked to a relevant research institute:

  • Advanced Instrumentation is organized in cooperation with ENTEG, KVI-CART and SRON, research institutes specialized in instrumentation for many decades. Students may choose to focus on either radiation or space instrumentation.

  • Smart Factories was developed with the input of companies from the Innovation Cluster Drachten and the Region of Smart Factories organization. This track is mostly based on control engineering and includes robotics and autonomous systems.

  • Process Design for Energy Systems specifically focuses on the transition from fossil fuels to sustainable energy sources. It includes process design as wel as computational fluid dynamics. The research at ENTEG is directly connected to this track.

  • Materials for Mechanical Engineering focuses on the processing of materials for mechanical system applications. This track is a collaboration between ENTEG and the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials that is ranked within the worldwide top-15 of materials science research.

opbouwThe Master's degree programme in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Groningen is a two year programme and has four tracks to choose from. Each track contains a compulsory design project at a company and a research project at renowned research institutes.
1e jaar In the first year of the programme you will follow a total of twelve courses, of which six courses are compulsory and six are electives. The courses depend on which track you choose.

2e jaar In the second year of the programme, you will perform a design project and a research project. The Design Project takes place at a company or research institute outside of the University of Groningen (in the Netherlands or abroad) to provide you with work experience closely related to the kind of job you will do after graduation. The Research Project takes place at a research group within the University of Groningen and is meant to equip you with key research experience and skills.

track Advanced Instrumentation

The education in the Advanced Instrumentation track focusses on two major themes.

One is radiation instrumentation for science and healthcare, in collaboration with researchers based at KVI-Center for Advanced Radiation Technology (KVI-CART), who develop advanced instrumentation for various fields of scientific research as well as for healthcare (proton therapy). The second theme is Astronomical and Space Instrumentation that is developed together with researchers based at the Netherlands Institute for Space Research (SRON).

track Process Design for Energy Systems

The track Process Design for Energy Systems concentrates on the technology needed for the storage of energy.

Energy is one of the three focal points of the University of Groningen, and the transition from fossil fuels to sustainable energy sources is given special attention. This is why the university is a partner in the Energy Academy Europe.

track Smart Factories

A second track on Smart Factories is developed together with the companies in the consortium Innovatiecluster Drachten.

The University of Groningen is a partner in the largest field lab of the Netherlands: Region of Smart Factories. This consortium brings together multiple smaller and larger companies and universities in order to develop the factory of the future: intelligent, connected and customized production processes, for intelligent, connected and customized products. Researchers from the Engineering and Technology institute Groningen (ENTEG) and the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials participate in this field lab and contribute to this component of the education.

track Materials for Mechanical Engineering

The fourth track Materials for Mechanical Engineering focuses on how materials need to be processed for mechanical system applications.

For example, how various classes of materials need to be combined to increase the performances of the resulting material. The staff members teaching in this track perform their research at ENTEG and the highly ranked Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials.

All our science and engineering programmes offer study abroad possibilities at a number of partner institutions. Our partners include top-100 universities in Europe (for example in Germany, UK, and Sweden) and in the USA, China, South-East Asia, and South America.

The Admissions Board will decide whether you can be admitted to the Master's degree programme. Applications are evaluated on a continuous basis. You do not have to wait until the application deadline to apply.

Students with the following Bachelor's degree may apply:

From Universities in the Netherlands:

  • Students with a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, direct entry.
  • Students from other relevant engineering programs (such as Electrical Engineering) with taking into account the repairing of some deficiencies.

From Universities of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands:
  • Students with a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics or similar will need to do a tailor made pre-master programme.

Professor Francken
T.F.V. 'Professor Francken' is the study association for students of Applied Physics at the University of Groningen.
The association is named after Groningen's first ever professor of applied physics, and focuses on students and staff from the applied physics departments.
The association has more than 700 members and organizes annual events including a symposium, excursions in the Netherlands and a foreign trip, as well as more informal activities, such as regular drinks parties.
TBV Lugus
Students of Industrial Engineering and Management have their own study association, known as Lugus.
Lugus organizes various activities for its members, both social, educational and career-oriented. In addition, Lugus provides study aids in the shape of summaries and organizes regular book sales. Nearly all students of Industrial Engineering and Management join Lugus, which now boasts more than 550 members. This number is rising every year..
