How do you keep your employees motivated? How do you optimise team performance? And how do you strategically align human resources with the goals of the organisation?

As a graduate of a Master of Science in Human Resource Management (HRM) you have gained academic knowledge and skills to consider and explore how HRM policies and practices can be developed and applied to ensure the availability, employability, commitment and vitality of employees needed to accomplish organisational goals. You have learned to do this by taking an evidence-based, scientific approach.

In the one-year Master's degree program in HRM you follow specific HRM courses like Strategic HRM, Leadership, Work Design and Team Processes, Labour Law, and Personnel Instruments. You learn to anticipate internal and external changes that affect the management of work and people in an organisation. Therefore topics such as technological development, internationalisation of business, changing legislations, social security and labor conditions are of interest as well. You complete the program by performing research and writing a thesis.

Our master is an integral, specialised HRM program with a research-driven, behavior-oriented approach. You learn to base HRM on scientific evidence and apply theory to practice of HRM. We address HRM issues from both a strategic and a behavioral perspective, with specific attention to leadership, team processes, labor law and personnel instruments. We offer a broad menu of electives.
Further, the program is managed by high quality staff and has been internationally accredited by the AACSB and EQUIS, ensuring a high quality education, which only 1% of universities reach worldwide.

The Master of Science in Human Resource Management (HRM) aims to graduate students who are able to define, analyse, and evaluate problems and issues related to the management of work and employment of people in organisations. You acquire rigorous academic thinking and scientific skills to consider and explore how HRM policies and practices can be developed and applied to ensure the availability, employability, commitment, and vitality of employees needed to accomplish organisational goals.

The main courses are Strategic Human Resource Management, Leadership, Work Design & Team Processes, Research & Professional Skills for HRM, Labour Law (either a Dutch or international version), and Personnel Instruments. The focus of the courses is on understanding and applying theories and principles that research has shown to advance the management of human resources in organisations. You practice adopting this research-based approach when you conduct your own research project.

You learn how HRM policies and practices can be established on the best available research-based evidence that has been obtained and established in social and business sciences. You practice to adopt this research-based approach when you conduct your own research projects during the program. To complete your MSc HRM, you write a master thesis, which may be combined with an internship within an organisation.

But successful studying depends on many different factors, so it is understandable that you may need to consult an impartial expert to discuss your study progress and personal circumstances that influence your studies. The faculty's study advisors are available to help you. Obviously, everything discussed with the study advisor remains confidential.

A very interesting field of expertise

My expectations of the HRM programme were absolutely justified. The human resources within organizations have proven to be even more important than I had expected. The ways of influencing them and balancing for example the demand and supply of human capital in combination with legislation is a complex but very interesting field of expertise.

"I’ve always been interested in the human capital of organizations and the psychological and managerial difficulties and possibilities it involves...
I had just completed my study Facility Management and was pretty sure that the HRM master could broaden my knowledge and expertise level and above all would be a very interesting and challenging experience.
Two years later and very close to finishing the masters programme HRM, I can conclude that my expectations at the beginning were absolutely justified. The human resources within organizations have proven to be even more important than I had expected. The ways of influencing them and balancing for example the demand and supply of human capital in combination with legislation is a complex but very interesting field of expertise.
The build-up of the programme challenges students to face those complex problems within organizations and to use existing literature to come up with the most effective solutions. I have experienced this as a very good way of approaching HRM-related problems. Students were actively involved in the different courses and lecturers were able to communicate their enthusiasm about the field.
When writing the master thesis and using real time data from existing organizations, I had to use all my experiences from the previous semester to deal with HRM processes within organizations. I am sure that my future job will be within the HRM sector. Working at for example a large consultancy firm or at the HRM department of an international organization seems very challenging and different every day."
