Chemistry in Groningen is the home of 2016 Nobel Prize winner Ben Feringa, who has won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his research on a light-driven rotary molecular motor.

How can I make a flexible solar cell out of organic molecules? Can I build a car engine on a molecular level? Can I synthesize life? Can I cure tuberculosis? You will encounter such questions in the Master's degree programme in Chemistry at the University of Groningen.

The 2-year programme is fully taught in English and embedded in an internationally leading research environment. The programme offers a great deal of freedom in topics and has a strong focus on research; students spend 50% of their time in research labs. It is organized along three main specializations:

› Advanced Materials
Focus of this specialization lies the chemistry of functional materials, including aspects like material synthesis and self-assembly, supramolecular chemistry, structural characterization techniques and functional properties.

› Catalysis and Green Chemistry
This specialization focuses on different aspects of catalysis by enzymes as well as synthetic homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts and key industrially relevant transformations.

› Chemical Biology (also offers an honours programme)
This specialization studies biology and the processes of life using the tools of chemistry and deals with topics ranging from understanding how biochemistry works, to protein engineering and the engineering of biological systems.

› Science, Business and Policy
This profile emphasizes the societal aspects of Science. You will learn to implement your chemistry knowledge in companies and policy organisations.

The Chemistry research project takes place in a research group within or across one of these specialisations. These groups are associated with three main research institutes that focus on chemistry: the Stratingh Institute for Chemistry, the Zernike Institute of Advanced Materials and the Groningen Biomolecular Science & Biotechnology Institute. The programme also offers the opportunity to do research in a lab abroad or in industry.

Apart from general subjects including reaction mechanism and spectroscopic methods, we teach and offer research projects across the entire spectrum of Chemistry, including: (in)organic synthesis, stereochemistry, polymer chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, biocatalysis & protein engineering, organometallic chemistry, molecular dynamic, quantum mechanics, green chemistry, synthetic biology and systems chemistry.

track Advanced Materials

Much of the impact of chemistry on every-day live is through materials.

Focus here is on the chemistry of functional materials, including aspects like material synthesis and self-assembly, supramolecular chemistry, structural characterization techniques and functional properties (magnetic, electronic, photonic and spintronic) as well as structural properties of bulk materials, thin films, tubes, wires and nanoparticles.

track Catalysis and Green Chemistry

Catalysis is the key technology in the development of green and sustainable chemical processes.

This specialization focuses on different aspects of catalysis by enzymes as well as synthetic homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts and key industrially relevant transformations. It includes synthesis, characterization and mechanisms as well as the design of sustainable chemical processes and life-cycle analyses.

track Chemical Biology

This specialization studies biology and the processes of life using the tools of chemistry.

It deals with topics ranging from understanding how biochemistry works, to protein engineering and the engineering of biological systems (synthetic biology) and questions related to the origin of life and the de-novo synthesis of life (systems chemistry).

profiel Science, Business & Policy

Interested in the business side of science? You can combine this Master's programme with the Science Business & Policy profile. The SBP profile includes a six-month internship as a scientific advisor.

You focus on the interface between Chemistry and Business and Policy emphasizing the societal aspects of Science. You will learn to implement your chemistry knowledge in companies and policy organisations. This is not only important for students who aspire an entrepreneurial business career, but also for all those researchers who wish to work within or collaborate with industry or governmental institutions.

specialisatie Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modeling

The Erasmus Mundus Programme in Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modeling is a research oriented programme, organised by the University of Groningen and universities from five other countries.

The programme specialises in the use and development of computational techniques in molecular sciences.
You will start the programme at one of the universities, follow a four-week Intensive Course in another country and spend at least 10 weeks at a partner university. Upon completion of the program, students will be awarded double degrees from two partner universities.

Our exchange programmes have a typical duration of one semester and count toward your final degree.

This Master's degree programme gives access to the additional, highly selective, High Tech Systems and Materials (HTSM) Honours Master.

The HTSM Honours Master is organized in cooperation with Philips and other major industry partners.

Chemische Binding
De Chemische Binding, or CB, is the study association for students taking a programme in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering at the University of Groningen.
The name translates as The Chemical Bond. The association aims to represent the interests of all students of chemistry or chemical engineering by organizing activities to enhance learning, such as practise sessions and excursions. It also provides an opportunity for students to join each other in less serious activities, such as the weekly drinks get-together, the annual Christmas dinner and a night-time volleyball tournament with a beer relay race.

Beroepsperspectief / arbeidsmarkt

This degree programme in Chemistry is primarily meant for students who want to become researchers or research managers. It also provides an excellent preparation for a PhD project, either in Groningen or elsewhere. Groningen students have found jobs all over Europe and beyond in major companies, including DSM, Akzo Nobel, Corus, ASML or Philips.

In addition, many chemists who are trained as researchers find jobs that are less research-oriented. This is because the programme also pays attention to communication skills, teamwork, presentation techniques and IT skills. During their training as researchers in chemistry, students develop general competences that make them highly versatile and widely employable, so Groningen chemistry graduates can be found in consulting agencies, commercial functions, product research and development, product management or teaching.
