!This programme is a specialization of multiple master's degrees. Depending on your background and interests, you will select your major. Depending on that choice you will earn one of these diploma's :
  • Biology
  • Medical Biology
  • Molecular Life Sciences
  • Science
  • Chemistry
  • Physics and Astronomy
  • Mathematics
  • Computing Science
  • This specialisation will teach you how innovation is managed in company strategies, how government designs policy and how that interacts with societal challenges.

Both the public sector and businesses struggle with the question of how to address sustainability, health, energy and IT security issues. Many of the challenges that society faces are rooted in the natural or computer sciences but have strong links to other disciplines. Solutions require scientists with an additional understanding of the societal aspects of these problems, and the ability to speak the language of and work with all possible stakeholders like scientists, civil servants and politicians.

The Master's specialisation in Science, Management and Innovation will therefore take you out of the lab and place you right in the heart of society. After the first year in which you broaden your knowledge in your scientific field, you'll learn the skills you can use to make a direct contribution to society. This contribution can range from the creation of policies that tackle social issues to project development or market research.

The combination of expertise – science, policy and business – is highly sought after and will prepare you for a dynamic career in business, a job in the public sector or in the a social (research) organisation.

    Waarom aan de Radboud Universiteit?

A unique programme in which you further develop your knowledge in your scientific field in the first year and then learn to apply your science-based background to a business or policy question in your second year.
    • You'll gain working experience outside of academia during your Master's and gain experience of 'soft' skills like policy and strategy, writing, interviewing as well as presentation and cooperation skills. These skills will widen your job opportunities.
    • It's a great experience to work together with students from various disciplines and backgrounds.
    • You create a unique profile by choosing from one of the following five themes: Climate & Energy, Health, Water & Biodiversity (only for Biology Master's), Managing ICT innovations (only for Computing Science Master's), Security (only for Computer Security Master's).

    Studieprogramma

    Unsplashed background img 2
1e jaar The programme of the first year depends on the Master's programme that you choose. It generally consists of compulsory courses, (free) electives, a research project and a philosophy course.
2e jaar During the second your you will connect that knowledge to a Science, Management and Innovation theme.

    tracks

    track Security

    Only for Cyber Security Master's

Computer security, big data, privacy: all societal challenges in an increasingly networked and transparent world. The Science, Management and Innovation will offer students of the specialisation in Cyber Security a broader picture and social context of computer security issues.

    track Climate and Energy

For the theme Climate and Energy we created courses directly geared to students interested in management and innovation.

Preventing human impact on the global climate, which is deeply intertwined with our energy system, is considered as one of the greatest challenges currently facing mankind. In this theme, you will learn all about what the transition to a sustainable energy system would entail.

In the core theme course Energy and Climate, you'll acquire basic knowledge about the climate system and climate change, energy data, energy balances, energy technologies and national and international climate policy. In Energy Modelling, you'll learn to understand, use and improve global and national energy models as well as electricity market models. In the course Bio-economy, you'll explore the content, impact and considerations of shifting from a fossil-based to a bio-based economy from different perspectives. In the Sustainable Consumption and Production course, you'll learn how to use the important tool of life-cycle assessment, and get familiar with its possibilities and limitations.

    track Water and Biodiversity

    Only for Biology Master's.

Ecosystems worldwide are under pressure because of various environmental pressures. The water cycle has been changed considerably because of human population increases and economic development. Both interrelated challenges need to be addressed for a sustainable future. This theme can be done by Biology Master's students who have chosen the Water & Environment or Communities & Ecosystems specialisations.

    track Managing ICT Innovations

    Only for Computing Science Master's

This societal theme concerns impact of innovative ICT solutions in business and public sector contexts. New ICT systems can improve productivity considerably but the implementation of these ICT solutions needs to be managed.

    track Health

For the theme Health we created courses directly geared to students interested in management and innovation.

In many areas of the world, health has been improving but new diseases threaten progress. Moreover, new forms of management and modern IT developments are changing the face of the health sector. Neuroscience and human enhancements are among the intriguing topics addressed in this theme.

The core theme course The Future of Health will discuss and detail various innovations in the health technology field. In the Neuroscience course, the science behind applications of neuroscience will be discussed based on practical cases. In Biosynthetic Materials innovations in synthetic bio-chemistry, nanomedicine and tissue engineering will be discussed from the research lab to the clinical trial, highlighting the different aspects of development and societal embedding of new health technology.

    • Compulsory courses (15 EC)
    • Core theme course (6 EC)
    • Theme courses (2 x 3 EC)
    • Electives (3 EC)
    • SMI Research project (30 EC)
During your research project, you'll work outside of the university on a real-world research problem in the theme you have chosen. Here, you take the essential step of applying what you have learned in your courses into practice. The project can be done within a company, a governmental organisation or department, the strategy department of a research lab or a non-governmental organisation, both inside or outside the Netherlands or Europe. The staff as well as our Career Service will help you find a tailor-made internship position that meets you future ambition.

    teachers
The courses take place in a very stimulating, personal setting. The lecturers are open to any question you might have on the course matter. They can also provide you with advice on internships or other study-related choices.
    study abroad
You can choose to perform your elective courses or internship(s) abroad. There are for example close contacts with the Max Planck Institute in Germany. For other possibilities, you can always contact a lecturer or the student advisor.

The societal specialisation in Science, Management and Innovation equips you with the tools and skills to become a professional in the world of management and innovation, whilst providing you with a broader societal perspective that will be useful in a scientific career.
    Gained knowledge and skills:
    • Theoretical knowledge in organisation design, financial analysis, strategic analysis, marketing concepts and innovation management.
    • An understanding of and ability to analyse problems in organisations in an environment affected by the application of science and technology by assessing literature and developing cases, interviewing people and doing research within a business or governmental setting.
    • Competences for communication and cooperation with people with different backgrounds and interests. You'll learn how to write comments and discussion notes, write a policy advice and research proposal and present research results.

    Beroepsperspectief / arbeidsmarkt

Skills that you acquire could also prepare you for a career in a large consultancy company, such as Accenture or McKinsey. Several of our graduates have gone on to become entrepreneurs and start their own company, but others work for civil society organisations or applied research for society.
Career perspectives are excellent, in particular as the research project provides an entry point into a viable employer, and valuable work experience. Usually students find jobs for employers that are in some way connected to the area of their main Master's programme and/or to the theme they chose as their specialisation. For example, a Computer Science student who chose the theme Security may go to work for a bank or the police. And a Mathematics student who chose the theme Climate & Energy might go to work for an energy company or a national Ministry of the Environment. In other words, the options are endless.
