Are you going to bridge the gap between early biomedical research results and clinical practice? Or would you rather get your hands on DNA, RNA and protein laboratory research? You can also delve into neuro-biological and neuro-computational mechanism of the brain.

The Master's in Medical Biology at the Radboud University focuses on gaining a deeper understanding of the human system; either on the surface of biological and medical science, human epigenomics or the brain. We therefore offer these topics in close collaboration with the Radboud Institute for Health Sciences (RIHS), the Radboud university medical centre (Radboudumc), the Radboud Institute for Molecular Life Sciences (RIMLS) and the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour (DI).

Within each specialisation, you'll have plenty of room to customise your programme. A great deal involves internships; the best way to develop your knowledge and skills and to prepare yourself for your future career. You can get trained in research in order to become a PhD candidate, or focus on societal, policy and business issues and solutions.

specialisatie Human Biology

The Master's specialisation in Human Biology teaches you to translate fundamental biomedical discoveries into applied clinical practice and public health issues.

The Human Biology specialisation combines fundamental human biology with clinical studies in a strong translational way. It provides you with extensive biological knowledge, and experience in working with animal and patient samples. In this way, you'll be trained to bridge the gap between biomedical research results and clinical practice.

This wouldn't be possible within the walls of the Faculty of Science. That's why there's an extensive collaboration between the Faculty of Science and university medical centers in the field of Human Biology. You'll get the best of both worlds: a thorough background in for example molecular oncology, human genetics, physiology and metabolism as well as a clinical view on diseases. This is an excellent background for a medical researcher or a job at the interface of science and society, such as a consultant, policy officer or communications advisor in the area of food or health.

specialisatie Medical Epigenomics

Medical epigenomics is the only Master's specialisation in the Netherlands covering the function of our epigenome, a key factor in regulating gene expression and in a wide range of diseases.

Our skin cells, liver cells and blood cells all contain the same genetic information. Yet these are different types of cells, each performing their own specific tasks. How is this possible? The explanation lies in the epigenome: a heritable, cell-type specific set of chromosomal modifications, which regulates gene expression.

The epigenome consists of small and reversible chemical modifications of the DNA or histone proteins, such as methylation, acetylation and phosphorylation. It changes the spatial structure of DNA, resulting in gene activation or repression. These processes are crucial for our health and also play a role in many diseases, like autoimmune diseases, cancer and neurological disorders. As epigenetic modifications are reversible, you can imagine the great potential of so-called epi-drugs.

In this specialisation, you'll study epigenetic mechanisms during development and disease from different angles. This includes studying DNA and RNA by next-generation sequencing and analysing proteins by mass spectrometry. In addition, you'll be trained to design computational strategies that allow the integration of these multifaceted, high-throughput data sets into one system.

Equipping you with the tools and skills to become a professional intermediary between science and society whilst getting a broader societal perspective that will be useful in a scientific career.

Science and technology clearly have a profound influence on society, but the reverse is also true: society significantly shapes the ways in which science and technology evolve. Economic interests, public opinion and policy shifts are decisive for the shaping of science and technology. However, experience has shown that scientists on the one hand and the general public, government and businesses on the other aren't always able to clearly understand one another. That is why experts with a background in science and an understanding of social processes are indispensable.

This specialisation will therefore teach you how to build a bridge between scientific expertise and societal practices. You'll become a biologist, chemist, mathematician, etc. that reflects on the implications of scientific results and advises on how to turn this knowledge into practical use for policymaking or communication purposes. This reflection will not just be scientific; you'll also learn how to detect the philosophical, political and ethical side of issues. You'll make scientists familiar with social perceptions as much as you'll be advising governments and businesses or informing the general public.

specialisatie Science, Management and Innovation

This specialisation will teach you how innovation is managed in company strategies, how government designs policy and how that interacts with societal challenges.

Both the public sector and businesses struggle with the question of how to address sustainability, health, energy and IT security issues. Many of the challenges that society faces are rooted in the natural or computer sciences but have strong links to other disciplines. Solutions require scientists with an additional understanding of the societal aspects of these problems, and the ability to speak the language of and work with all possible stakeholders like scientists, civil servants and politicians.

The Master's specialisation in Science, Management and Innovation will therefore take you out of the lab and place you right in the heart of society. After the first year in which you broaden your knowledge in your scientific field, you'll learn the skills you can use to make a direct contribution to society. This contribution can range from the creation of policies that tackle social issues to project development or market research.

The combination of expertise – science, policy and business – is highly sought after and will prepare you for a dynamic career in business, a job in the public sector or in the a social (research) organisation.

Een master met vakinhoudelijke én didactische verdieping, waarna je direct aan de slag kunt als eerstegraads docent.

Passie voor je vak, kennis delen, presenteren, leiding geven en interesse voor didactiek. Bij die drijfveren sluit de masterspecialisatie Science and Education perfect aan. In deze tweejarige masterspecialisatie behaal je én je Master of Science-titel én je eerstegraads lesbevoegdheid, zodat je docent Wiskunde, Biologie, Natuurkunde of Scheikunde kunt worden – afhankelijk van jouw studierichting. Na afronding kun je lesgeven in de onder- en bovenbouw van het vmbo, de havo, het vwo en in het volwassenenonderwijs.

De masterspecialisatie Science and Education is een samenwerking tussen de Faculteit der Natuurwetenschappen, Wiskunde en Informatica en de Radboud Docenten Academie. In het eerste jaar van je master volg je inhoudelijke curussen van je master en doe je een onderzoeksstage. Het tweede jaar is helemaal gericht op (leren) lesgeven. Je brengt de helft van de tijd door op een stageplaats, voor de klas, en de andere helft op de universiteit. Je koppelt praktijkervaringen aan de theorie en vice versa. Overigens kun je ook ná het volgen van een bèta-master, altijd nog de eenjarige post-master tot docent doen.

Dutch students can apply via After admittance to the Master's programme in Medical Biology, you can enrol for the specialisation of your choice.

In order to get admission to this Master's you'll need a completed Bachelor's degree in Biology with a minor of at least 30 ec in medical biological topics, or in medicine.
