The two-year programme provides students with a solid base in research methodology, statistics and biostatistics, laboratory research and communication skills. Leading scientists in fields ranging from metabolism, membrane transport, neuromuscular disease and inflammation to screening efficacy, clinical interventions and evidence-based medicine are involved in the teaching programme as lecturers and tutors.
Students choose one of three specialisations belonging to one of the research institutes and combine that with one of three career profiles. The research institute will be your learning environment, and a mentor of the institute will help you design your programme.

Biomedical Sciences specialisations and research institutes
  1. For Molecular and Cellular Research, choose Radboud Institute for Molecular Life Sciences (RIMLS)
  2. For Intervention, Clinical and Population Research, choose Radboud Institute for Health Sciences (RIHS)
  3. For Medical Neuroscience, choose Donders Centre for Medical Neuroscience

Waarom aan de Radboud Universiteit?

The programme offers topics in a wide range from molecule to man to population. Furthermore, students choose one of three career profiles: research, consultancy or communication. Together with their mentor, students design their own programme. The personal study plan consist of at least two internships, courses within the programme Biomedical Sciences and electives.
Students choose a Radboud research institute as a learning environment and will participate in activities organised by this institute, e.g. seminars, journal clubs, or meetings. Moreover, the research institute supplies the student with a mentor, whom students can consult when designing their personal study plan. The three institutes are:
  • Radboud Institute for Molecular Life Sciences (RIMLS) - Molecular and cellular research
  • Radboud Institute for Health Sciences (RIHS) - Intervention, clinical and population research
  • Donders Center for Medical Neuroscience (DCMN) - Medical neuroscience

A broad range of courses are offered within the programme. From human movement sciences to toxicology, and from epidemiology to immunology and cancer research; all Radboudumc research themes are represented. Moreover, students can opt for additional elective courses in other programmes at the University or at other universities in the Netherlands and abroad.

Studieprogramma

opbouw
Programme outline (at least 120 EC):
  1. ≥24 EC* of courses within the programme Biomedical Sciences
  2. 6 EC of literature thesis
  3. ≥60 EC of internships
  4. if applicable: electives

Students generally start with the courses from the Biomedical Sciences programme, followed by the others components mentioned above. The mentor is available to advise students with their choices.
The three career profiles the students can choose from are:
  • Research profile
  • Communication profile
  • Consultancy profile

The research profile provides students with an extensive background in academic research within the field of biomedical sciences. In general, graduates will find employment in scientific departments of universities, hospitals or other institutions where fundamental or pioneering research is performed.

The communication profile teaches about the problems that may be encountered when communicating about biomedical sciences, and how such problems may be resolved. Subjects include communication theory and how to apply this knowledge in a variety of ways.

The consultancy profile prepares students for a role as a scientific consultant or advisor. Scientific consultants combine ample knowledge of their scientific discipline with insight into the interaction between science, technology, and society. Additionally, they are sensitive to the views and stakes of persons involved, and have the analytical and communicative skills to handle these.

1e jaar Students have the freedom to design their own master's programme. Generally students start their programme with Radboudumc courses from the Biomedical Sciences programme, specific to their field of interest or career profile. During the second semester, most students choose to take electives abroad, start their first internship or write their literature thesis.

objectives
An MSc in biomedical sciences:
  1. Combines broad fundamental knowledge on the mechanisms underlying health and disease processes in the full width of biomedical sciences with specialist knowledge on a specific field of expertise within the biomedical sciences, e.g. molecular life sciences, clinical neurosciences or population research;
2. Gains an in-depth, expert understanding of a (new or unfamiliar) biomedical topic on the basis of a literature thesis and describes the state of the art concerning a disease, mechanism or methodology;
3. Explores the context of health(care) problems and translates fundamental knowledge into biomedical research that aims towards prevention, therapy or diagnostics of disease;
4. Conducts biomedical research independently, keeping up with international standards;
5. Establishes him- or herself as a member of a professional network of scientists, including:
  • the competency to participate in scientific discussions and present his/her work to an international scientific audience in the English language,
  • the capacity to write a scientific article at the level of international peer-reviewed journals;

Beroepsperspectief / arbeidsmarkt

Several surveys were performed amongst graduates. Most graduates found a position shortly after graduation, which took 3.1 months on average. Approximately 50% started as a PhD student after graduation. Unemployment under respondents is low, shortly after graduation as well as in the long run. The alumni who graduated approximately 15 years ago indicate that they are using biomedical knowledge in their current professions and that they are satisfied with their career paths so far (84%).
