Prepares students for a career in biological or cognitive psychology with a focus on research skills. English-language programme has six specialisations within two fields.

Psychology is a challenging master's programme that prepares students for a professional career in one of the emerging fields of biological and cognitive psychology. The programme is research-driven and offers six specialisations :
  • Developmental Psychology
  • Cognitive Neuroscience
  • Neuropsychology
  • Health and Social Psychology
  • Psychology and Law
  • Work and Organisational Psychology.

Each specialisation starts with four theoretical courses combined with academic, research and professional skills trainings. The second part of the year is devoted to planning and carrying out a research internship under the supervision of the academic staff. A substantial number of students do this internship abroad with one of our many international research partners. You complete the master's programme by writing a master's thesis on your research internship.

specialisaties

specialisatie Psychology and Law

The aim of the specilisation in Psychology and Law is to familiarise you with typical themes in the domain of Psychology and Law.

For example, you learn how to analyse the reliability of eyewitness testimonies. In doing so, you study memory from various perspectives. The issue of testing is also explored. For example, what tests can be used to detect malingerers or to predict the risk of recidivism? The programme in Psychology and Law is underpinned by two important elements: research and testing. Students will acquire practical skills in administering various tests that can be used in the psycho-legal field and will learn how to write an expert witness report.

specialisatie Work and Organisational Psychology

The specialisation in Work and Organisational Psychology combines theoretical knowledge on the cognitive aspects of work behaviour with practical applications in the workplace.

The focus is on how people behave in organisations and why they do so. The specialisation provides expertise in the major content areas of Work and Organisational Psychology.

specialisatie Developmental Psychology

Developmental Psychology is the study of the development of behaviour and cognitive functions during the lifespan, from infancy to old age.

In this biological specialisation, there is special focus on understanding how the development of certain behaviours and cognitive functions relates to a person's biological makeup and the development of the brain. In this specialisation, you will learn what is needed, both biologically and environmentally, to develop audition, vision, language, social perception, emotion and motor abilities.

specialisatie Cognitive Neuroscience

Cognitive Neuroscience unravels the cognitive and neural mechanisms that are at work in the core aspects of human behaviour.

In other words whenever we hear, see, think, talk, attend to others or move. During this specialisation you learn about Cognitive Neuroscience theories and how to measure and interpret human brain activity, using imaging techniques (fMRI, EEG/MEG) to observe and modulate (TMS) the brain 'at work'. You will also gain practical experience in using these imaging techniques.

specialisatie Health and Social Psychology

The Health and Social Psychology specialisation studies the nature and origin of bad habits from a multidisciplinary perspective.

Students look at questions such as: What is the contribution of the media and social comparison processes to a distorted body image? Are impulsive children more likely to become obese? Why do adolescents take more risks than adults? What is the role of significant others and social norms in the willingness to practice safe sex?

specialisatie Neuropsychology

The Neuropsychology specialisation focuses on cognition, the brain, and behaviour in health and disease.

The emphasis is on cognitive as well as affective functions. It looks at general intellectual abilities and biopsychological mechanisms in children, adolescents and adults. Both theoretical and applied questions are applied to neural, cognitive, medical and psychological/psychosocial factors.

Joris Fonteijn
Bridging the gap between science and practice

“After graduating in 2010, I started working for Tabuala Rasa, a consultancy agency in Den Haag, first as a trainee and not long after that as a junior consultant. In a way, the agency bridges the gap between science and practice. And just as I did during my studies, Tabula Rasa works in an evidence-based way. This means that we consult existing information on the subject and then we try to find a way to apply that information to solve the problem...
There are several aspects of my studies that I also need in my current job. One example of a very useful course is 'Manipulation', which deals with a number of influence techniques I also use on the job.

Furthermore, I regularly work with SPSS and benefit from the knowledge acquired in Statistics when I am analysing data. The entire programme and in particular the course 'Intervention Mapping' have contributed to my academic and structured way of thinking and carrying out assignments. I hugely benefit from that in my current job.

Joris Fonteijn (The Netherlands)
Master's graduate in Health and Social Psychology
Consultant at Tabula Rasa, Den Haag

Well prepared

“During my master's in Psychology and Law, I learned to connect sound scientific knowledge in psychology with relevant social problems like law enforcement, detention and violence. Thanks to this unique combination, I was well prepared for a research internship at the Dutch Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations. I conducted research into inappropriate and threatening communications toward government officials for which I got access to thousands of messages from citizens...
My task is to make a quick analysis of potential crises in and outside the country and distribute the information to other governmental organisations. In addition to this more practical work, I also conduct research into the public's opinion about safety and the government, for which I take advantage of thorough training in statistics, and write articles for the website. During my work, I developed a special interest in international disaster management and I decided to specialise in humanitarian aid. After two years at the National Crisis Centre, I was accepted into a European master's programme in International Humanitarian Action. For this master's programme, I again profit from the relevant knowledge I acquired during my master's in Psychology and Law at Maastricht University.”

Master's graduate in Psychology and Law
Member of National Crisis Centre (NCC) of the Ministry of Security and Justice

Closeness to the operational world

“Shortly after my graduation as work and organizational psychologist at Maastricht University, I started as a PhD student at the National Aerospace Laboratory (NLR) in Amsterdam. Usually people's first reaction is: “Aviation and psychology? How does that fit together?” Quite well, especially after having studied in Maastricht!

During my master's, I built up my knowledge about human performance and cognition, training design, new forms of communication, and development of expertise...
My supervisors in Maastricht have been very supportive in organizing the external placement and facilitated the cooperation with LVNL.

The theoretical foundations, the research competencies, and the aviation-specific knowledge I obtained during the one-year programme at Maastricht University are crucial for my current work about teamwork and shared mental models of air traffic controllers. I enjoy the practical approach of NLR and the closeness to the operational world. However, since I am still affiliated with Maastricht University through my PhD, I can benefit from the excellent expertise within the department of Work and Organizational Psychology. Studying in Maastricht was not only fun, but also a great stepping stone for my professional future.”

Pia Justen (The Netherlands)
Master's graduate in Work and Organisational Psychology
Psychologist at National Aerospace Laboratory in Amsterdam and PhD candidate, Maastricht University

A dream come true

“Choosing a master's wasn't very difficult for me. During my UM studies I wanted to learn about the biological mechanisms and possible deficits affecting people's functioning, especially children's (0–18 yrs). The master's in Developmental Psychology was a perfect fit.

While studying I realised I didn't want to work in research but in mental healthcare (MHC), giving treatment, guidance and psychological education to children and their parents. My experience is that this master's is not just about making a research career possible...

At the moment my dream is coming true: I'm working in MHC with children (0–18) and their parents and in nine months I'll be a qualified MHC psychologist.”

Claudia Bosch
Master's graduate in Developmental Psychology
Mental healthcare psychologist
