The programme looks beyond the institutions of the EU and the mechanics of European integration to explore global
developments and multi-level governance in a broader context. This student-centred, interdisciplinary programme is among the largest, and certainly the most international, in Europe and has an excellent reputation. The programme adopts an interdisciplinary approach, combining political science, history, international relations, economics and cultural studies. The focus is on the underlying issues of power and influence, governance and culture.
The MA offers three exciting specialisations:
- European Politics & International Relations: concentrates on the international role and politics of the European Union as a political entity
- European Public Policy & Administration: focuses on the political and administrative mechanisms and balances between the institutions of the European Union, its Member States and civil societies
- Europe in a Globalising World: focuses on Europe and its Member States' shifting roles on the world stage in parallel to collective efforts to address global challenges such as international migration and development

specialisatie European Politics & International relations
concentrates on the international role and politics of the European Union as a political entity
This specialisation is about the EU as an international player. Trade, energy, the environment, finance, migration, and conflict – some issues are just too big for a single member state to tackle alone. You will look at how different countries – with their own interests, militaries, and diplomatic corps – come together to deal with common challenges. You will examine the types of ethical and practical issues underpinning international cooperation and conflict. Key themes include international relations theory and foreign policy analysis, insights from political economy, human rights law and other fields.
These issues have acquired new urgency with so much turmoil in the world, from the recent uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa to the instability in Ukraine to heightened economic cooperation among the BRICS countries. You will address issues of war and peace, trade and economic integration, environment and climate change, and more.
specialisatie European Politics & Administration
focuses on the political and administrative mechanisms and balances between the institutions of the European Union, its Member States and civil societies
This specialisation examines the notoriously complex and dynamic workings of the EU. From agenda setting and decision making to policy implementation and evaluation, from how power and influence work in Brussels to how EU policies are applied in the member states – this specialisation gives you a behind-the-scenes look at each step in the process of EU policymaking and governance. You will take part in a workshop on the transposition of European directives into national legislation, and you will examine the role of civil society in EU integration and policymaking. You will gain a thorough understanding of new modes of governance in the EU.
specialisatie Europe in a Globalising World
focuses on Europe and its Member States' shifting roles on the world stage in parallel to collective efforts to address global challenges such as international migration and development
This specialisation focuses on the EU's role in global governance, addressing issues like international migration, international development, and how national, regional and international bodies can harness globalisation forces. The specialisation is anchored in international relations and comparative politics. You will look at EU relationships with other global players, international organisations and regional bodies and will examine international governance in the age of growing interdependence between countries, the global power shift characterised by the rise of the BRICS, and the growing role of non-state actors.
Special attention is paid to non-European perspectives on solutions to global challenges and to the institutions supporting global governance, particularly those devoted to cooperation between the EU and other international and regional organisations.
