What causes disease? How can we prevent it? And if disease is present, how can we treat it? This programme focuses on state of the art methodology and the skills that enable researchers to unravel the molecular mechanisms in health and disease. Your choice of research project (year 2) and laboratory reflects your choice of the five BMS specialisations*:
  1. Genetics and Genomics
  2. Imaging from Molecule to Man
  3. Inflammation and Pathophysiology
  4. Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism
  5. Regenerative Medicine

  • NOTE: As of September 2019, there will be a sixth specialisation: Neuromodulation.

Waarom aan de Maastricht University?

The programme is offered in partnership between Maastricht University and Hasselt University (Belgium). You participate in ongoing, cross-border research at both campuses, giving you not just hands-on experience but also an international network. Second, you have the intellectual freedom to pursue your own interests (e.g. many elective courses). Moreover, you follow an internship (during year 2) at an approved laboratory of your choice.

specialisaties

specialisatie Genetics and Genomics

.

Main focus: application of genetics and genomics principles in scientific research and in the clinic with specific attention for cancer, cardiogenetics, neurogenetics, model systems, forensics and personalised medicine.

specialisatie Imaging from Molecule to Man

The focus is on the biomedical problem and not so much on the underlying physical methodology/technology. Main question is how we can use advanced imaging modalities to understand biomedical problems.

specialisatie Inflammation and Pathophysiology

We aim to prepare you to contribute to the understanding of inflammation and pathological threads, and develop new treatment strategies.

specialisatie Neuromodulation (as of September 2019)

First basic and fundamental knowledge on the nervous system. Then: neuromodulation subjects, such as preclinical, clinical and industrial aspects of neuromodulation techniques and indications.

specialisatie Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism

Physiology & mechanisms underlying derailment > basis for design & optimisation of preventive & therapeutic nutritional & life-style interventions > improve metabolic health & alleviate diseased state

specialisatie Regenerative Medicine

Multidisciplinary field aiming at creating solutions to restore structure and function of permanently damaged tissues and organs by using a combination of science and technology.

This programme will give you:
  • in-depth, practical experience of the entire scientific process: formulating a testable hypothesis; designing a feasible experiment; managing your time and budget; processing, interpreting and reporting on the results; and critically evaluating the whole procedure
  • professional research skills such as giving poster presentations, writing articles and reports, participating actively in lab meetings, discussing your findings with colleagues and coaches, etc.
